10 Terrifying Places on Google Maps
If you’re on this blog, you already know that the world’s a big and scary place. Around every corner lurks an unknown horror or a creepy find, and whether you’re the type who gets excited over the spooky and the mysterious or not, you know that you should be careful!
Google Maps has made the world a little smaller, and you can use it to explore places you’ll never go. However, if you spend enough time on Google Maps, you’ll realize that there are some places that should probably have been left alone! Check out the 10 scariest places Google Maps can take you.
1. Mannequin Dump
Somewhere in Chile, a Google street car found this trash heap full of mannequins. What the mannequins had been used for we cannot say, and where they are bound, we don’t want to follow.
2. Bird People
In Musashino, close to Tokyo, apparently, they have a very some pretty dark traditions. In this image, a group of people in bird masks stare emptily at the Google camera. If you find the coordinates yourself and you take one step beyond them, their heads turn to follow you.
3. Lost Ship
At first glance, this image looks serene. However, it becomes a little more unsettling when you realize that it shows a ship smashed off the coast of North Sentinel Island, home to one of the very last uncontacted civilizations on the planet. These people are notoriously hostile to strangers, and they make it very plain they want to stay uncontacted!
4. Body Found
Google usually works pretty fast to remove unpleasant reminders of our own mortality from Google Maps, but they can’t catch everything. Here we can see the end of a true tragedy in Richmond, California.
5. Village of the Dolls
In Nagoro, Japan, an old woman spends all of her days making dolls. Not so creepy until you realize that she makes them in the likness of people who have left the village or who have died. It gets creepier when you realize that these dolls are seldom in the same place twice. It gets worse when you hear that the old woman only places the dolls; she says she has never moved one.
6. Cursed Figure
Sometimes, you realize that the Google Maps team is pretty glad it doesn’t slow down to get multiple shots. This semi-famous shot taken in Lorraine, France shows a distinctly sinister figure on a balconey. No one knows what it is or how it got there, but we do know that Google subsequently blurred it out in later iterations.
7. Shotgun Menace
Sometimes, the dangers that come from working for the Google Maps team is clear, obvious and unmistakeable. Detroit was declared the United States’ murder capital back in 2013, and here we can see Google Maps trying to document some of the more dangerous neighborhoods.
8. Desolate Town
No, it’s not a scene from The Walking Dead, though if you thought about it, it wouldn’t be too unexpected to see a zombie lurch from those houses. No, this is just a typical street in East St. Louis, a city that has lost over a third of its population in the last decade.
9. Gumby Beating
Sometimes, the things that you find on Google Maps are so strange that you don’t know what to do or say. In this scene, you can see two boys threatening or beating up a person in a Gumby suit. This is straight out of a surreal horror film.
10. Wrong Neighborhood
As if birds weren’t bad enough. In this shot, taken from Los Hoyas, Mexico, a group of people in a variety of monster masks stare down the Google Maps driver. Nothing good is going to come out of this encounter, and if you are in the neighborhood, it is worth keeping an eye out for this creepy gang.
