‘Mama’ Movie’s Test Footage is Incredibly Creepy
Guillermo del Toro’s film ‘Mama’ is a supernatural thriller that tells the terrifying tale of two little girls who disappeared into the woods the day that their parents were killed. When they are rescued years later and begin a new life, they find that that someone (or something) still wants to come tuck them in at night.
Rated as one of the scariest films of 2013, Mama is based on a 2008 short Argentine film of the same name. In this test footage, you’ll see actor and contortionist Javier Botet practice moving around as Mama. Botet’s incredibly convincing (that is, incredibly terrifying) movement is almost more scary than the film itself. It’s pretty clear that it takes someone who can contort their body to the extremes in order to achieve such unnatural, frightening movement.
In this other video, you can explore behind-the-scenes footage of Botet’s makeup process for Mama. Incredibly, no cgi was used for filming the demon Mama in the film; rather, it was all makeup and prosthetics that allowed the ghost to come to life.
