The Winchester Mansion
Sarah Winchester was the wife of the man who created the Winchester rifle, and she should have been able to spend her entire life doing exactly as she pleased. She thought the ghosts of Native Americans were pursuing her, and as a result, she built her mansion to trap them. In this creepy mansion, stairways lead to nowhere, some rooms slant from wall to wall, and some doors open to nothing at all. When she died, it took officials four days to find her body in her maze of a home.
Located in Ukraine, the town of Pripyat was once a bustling place for people of all ages to live and play. Then the Chernobyl disaster happened- one of the worst nuclear accidents in the world- and this town was emptied out. Pripyat feels like a haunted town these days. So much of the town is still intact, though covered in dust and ill-repaired. Fallen toys and silence reign supreme in the irradiated Pripyat today, and there is still no telling when the town’s inhabitants might be able to return.
The Island of the Dolls
According to local legend, there was once a girl who drowned close to this island. Stricken with grief and guilt, the caretaker hung up a doll in a nearby tree to appease her spirit. The caretaker, Don Julian Santana, felt that the dolls soothed some of his guilt, and as a result, thousands of dolls have been hung up since. Whether they have pleased a drowned young girl or the dolls have their own agenda in mind is not entirely clear.
Located in the Czech Republic, the Sedlec Ossuary was a place where people sent the bones of their loves ones. Once upon a time, burial in a holy place was thought to be essential to the life a Christian, and ossuaries assured this. Instead of putting the bones away to rot, however, they were brought to the forefront and used as macabre decorations. Looking up and seeing the bones that could possibly belong to a relative certainly adds a new terror to damnation.
Located in the UK, Bolton Strid looks like a beautiful little stream. Looks can be deceptive, however, and the Bolton Strid is far more deadly than might be supposed. Though this stream is quite narrow, it is incredibly deep. It is impossible to tell how deep the stream is because the water simply flows too fast. Anyone who has fallen into the stream has disappeared into its depths, never to be seen again. Their bodies are pinned to the limestone walls below, and there has never been a body recovered from the Bolton Strid’s depths.
When most people think of mummies, they only think about the bandaged wrapped mummies of Egypt. The truth is that for the most part, the only thing that you need to make a mummy is dry air. The people of the Andes absolutely understood this. At the Chauchilla Cemetery in Peru, an amazing archaeological discovery has brought Andean mummies to light. These mummies are bare to the world, and it is possible to see how they dressed, how they worked and what the world was like before they died.
