Trophy Takers and Collectors
When most people go through a milestone or have accomplished something important to themselves, they take souvenirs. They find meaningful items or pictures to carry ahead with them, and those items turn into treasured momentos.
In this instance, serial killers are just like other people. A kill is often something that is very important to them, and when they are done, they want to hang on to the memories of their grisly accomplishment. Serial killers take souvenirs, and unfortunately for all concerned, those souvenirs are nowhere near as benign as a special spoon or a postcard.
Jerome Brudos- Shoes
Jerome Brudos was a serial killer active in the 1960s. He was known as the Lust Killer, and they only caught him after he had killed four women. Brudos was a man obsessed with women, but it is also fair to say that he was obsessed with their shoes as well. He followed his victims home based on their shoes. He started with taking their shoes, but eventually, his murderous urges grew too strong. He took a breast, and finally, shortly before he was caught, he took a victim’s foot as well.
Jeffrey Dahmer- Penises
Dahmer was the serial killer that finally convinced the modern world that serial killers could be the people they least suspected. Dahmer was polite and well-spoken, and raised in a loving environment, he was always thought to be a kind person. In his spare time, he raped and murdered around 17 men and boys. He was known as the Milwaukee Cannibal, and though he did eat his victims, he also tore their penises from their body and kept them in a lobster pot.
John George Haigh- A Dog
Haigh was born at the beginning of the twentieth century in England. His life exposed him to the effects of both World Wars, and there is no denying that there was a great deal of tumult around at the time. However, many people survived the Blitz without killing people and dissolving their bodies in sulfuric acid. Haigh took clothing and jewelry from his victims, but perhaps most disturbing, he took his last victim’s dog, keeping it as a pet for himself.
Anatoly Onoprienko- Underwear
We think of underwear as a private thing, and it seems that Onoprienko was no different. In the mid 1990s, he admitted to shooting around 50 or more people. He would target people in isolated houses and then rampage through, killing all the people he could find. He was proud of his crimes even when caught, and he often took underwear from the scene of the crime, giving them to his girlfriend to wear.
Ahmad Suradji- Saliva
From 1986 to 1997, Suradji terrorized the country of Indonesia. This man was convinced that if he killed these people and buried their bodies a certain way around his home, he would be granted great power. In a disturbed dream, Suradji imagined his father telling him to murder seventy women. Then he had to drink their saliva to pull their power into himself. Suradji killed more than fifty women and systemically drained their bodies of saliva and drank it.
Alexander Pichuskin- Dates
Pichuskin was a man who relished killing. As a matter of fact, he managed to kill 49 times before he was caught. He considered himself the father of the people he had killed, stating that he had done his part to escort them into the next world. When the Moscow police searched his apartment, they found a chess set with dates carefully written on each square. Each date corresponded to a murder he had committed, marked down with loving detail and regard.
